On January 24 the television academy announced the pre-nominees for the 2019 Daytime Emmys, and “The Young and the Restless” emerged as the top TV drama with 21 citations across seven acting categories. But for the first time the academy has also released pre-nominees in their five acting categories for digital dramas, where YouTube’s “Giants” leads the way. Scroll down to see the complete list of contenders in all 12 races.
The 21 pre-noms for “Y&R” are a big step up from last year, when the series trailed with 15 acting contenders (not counting Best Guest Performer, for which pre-noms weren’t released last year). But it’s not an overwhelming lead. It’s followed closely by “General Hospital” with 20 contenders and “Days of Our Lives” with 19. The lone half-hour soap “The Bold and the Beautiful,” as is usually the case, has the fewest with 13.
These pre-nominations were determined by eligible peer judges who viewed sample acting clips for each submitted performer, and the top 10 contenders were selected in each category. The pre-nominated actors who made the cut in this initial round will now move on to the blue ribbon judging round, when panels will view acting reels to determine the final nominees and the ultimate winner.
Since nominees and winners will both be decided during this round, that means the victors will already have been determined by the time the official nominations are revealed on Wednesday, March 20.
