Dexter Roberts flashback: Before ‘The Voice,’ country artist sang ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ on ‘American Idol’ [WATCH]

The Voice” viewers were introduced to a country artist named Dexter Roberts on Night 3 of the Season 16 blind auditions, but longtime fans of “American Idol” have known this Alabama native since 2014.

On Season 13 of that reality TV singing show, Dexter ended up coming in seventh place, ultimately losing to Caleb Johnson. During Songs from the Cinema Week when there were only 11 contestants remaining, Dexter wowed then-judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. with his cover of “Sweet Home Alabama” from “Forrest Gump.” Watch this flashback video above.

Throughout his “Idol” journey Dexter stayed true to his country roots week after week. He received universal praise from the judges after his “Sweet Home Alabama” performance. Keith raved, “You’re really starting to feel the thing now and loosen up and really sing.” Jennifer added, “You are starting to believe you could win.” And Harry noted that his song choice was “really smart” because of how popular it was.

Dexter survived Songs from the Cinema Week when Ben Briley was eliminated instead. For his next several performances Dexter took on “Cruise” during Billboard Top 10 Week, “Boondocks” during Band Week, “One Mississippi” during Back to the Start Week, “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” during Songs from the 1980s Week and “Muckalee Creek Water” during Competitors’ Choice Week. That ended up being his final performance as a contestant, though he later returned for the season finale and sang “Alright” along with Darius Rucker and CJ Harris.

There was no mention of Dexter’s past “American Idol” experience during his first appearance on “The Voice,” not even from coach Kelly Clarkson, who of course won Season 1 of “Idol.” Kelly, Adam Levine, John Legend and Blake Shelton all pushed their buttons during Dexter’s blind audition of “Like a Cowboy” and fought to get Dexter on their teams, making him one of the rare four-chair turns of Season 16.

In the end, Dexter chose Blake as his mentor, surprising absolutely no one. Do YOU think Dexter will become the seventh winner from Team Blake, joining past champs Jermaine Paul (Season 2), Cassadee Pope (Season 3), Danielle Bradbery (Season 4), Craig Wayne Boyd (Season 7), Sundance Head (Season 11) and Chloe Kohanski (Season 13)?
