“I love Michelle, but you can’t compare what Michelle put out there, not technically, not creatively. My pieces were masterpieces,” said “Project Runway All Stars” runner-up Dmitry Sholokhov at the end of the season seven finale. Suffice it to say that Sholokhov didn’t take his defeat well when Michelle Lesniak was crowned the winner, and neither did a lot of our readers. The judges’ pick for the best designer in this all-champions season was controversial to say the least. Scroll down to see our complete poll results.
Sholokhov was undefeated coming into this season, having won “Runway” season 10 and then “All Stars” season 4. Lesniak won “Runway” season 11, and competed against Sholokhov in “All Stars” season 4, but she was eliminated right before the finale, which shattered her confidence. She wanted to win this world championship season as a way to give her career and self-esteem a boost and to help her and her husband out of their financial hardships. So her victory came as a welcome surprise. Her final collection wasn’t my personal favorite — I like weird, so I probably would have gone with Evan Biddell‘s regal reptilian theme — but I thought every collection was pretty outstanding, and I preferred her work throughout the season to Sholokhov, who often presented the judges with similar black dresses.
But many of our readers disagreed with me. Frances Russo commented, “Dmitry should have won. I would wear all his clothes. I would only wear one of Michelle’s. Sorry, but the judges got it wrong.” Robin Jhaveri-Wang agreed, adding, “His clothes were a work of art from start to finish.” And Florence Cathcart argues, “Dimitri deserves to be proud of his work. His clothes were beautiful and elegant compared to Michelle’s clunky collection. What a travesty.”
Not everyone was on Team Dmitry, though. Artlady said, “I totally agree with the judges! Michelle Lesniak had the best collection … The judges really got it right!” Becky also defended Lesniak’s victory: “I completely loved her collection, and please, the coat rocked.” So did Bre: “I’m glad that Michelle won because she is more humble than the others, and her collection was beautiful, as were all of the collections.”
The results of our poll were equally divided. Sholokhov had a plurality of support with 42% of respondents saying that he had the best collection in the finale. But that still leaves more than half of fans who would have picked someone else: 33% backed Lesniak, 13% would have picked Irina Shabayeva and 12% would have picked Biddell — lizard queens can’t get no respect.
Do you think the judges got it right on finale night, or should Sholokhov have walked away with an unprecedented third “Runway” title? Check out our poll results below, and you can keep voting here if you haven’t already.
