Not everyone thinks Dmitry should have won ‘Project Runway All Stars,’ according to our poll results

Dmitry Sholokhov came this close to winning an unprecedented third “Project Runway” title (he previously won “Runway” season 10 and “All Stars” season 4), but he finished second during the all-champions edition of “All Stars,” ultimately losing the title to Michelle Lesniak. That set off a firestorm of protest in our comments from fans who thought Sholokhov clearly had the best collection. Indeed, when thousands of readers chimed in by voting in our poll it was Sholokhov who came out on top — but not by much. Despite the outrage, more than half of our respondents actually would have picked someone else to win. Scroll down for our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.

Sholokhov himself seemed to think he was robbed of the title. He thought his designs were “masterpieces” and there was no comparison between his work and Lesniak’s. And 43% of fans agreed with that assessment. But that means there was another 57% who didn’t think he had the best collection in the bunch. In the finale episode the designers had four days to create six looks inspired by any theme of their choosing, and 35% of readers agreed with the judges that Lesniak’s bohemian “Harvest Mood” collection was the best in the bunch.

I thought all four collections were outstanding, so I would have been hard pressed to pick a winner, but I was partial to the weird conceptual work of Evan Biddell, who went with a lizard queen aesthetic that I thought was highly innovative. Alas, only 11% of readers thought he had the best finale collection. Irina Shabayeva‘s geometric looks also got 11% of the vote. So based on fans’ responses, the “Runway” judges were right about the top two designers, and it was a close call to pick the winner. But yes, if fans got a vote, it would have been Sholokhov.
