No one had a rougher night than tap dancer Eddie Hoyt during the first live show of “So You Think You Can Dance” season 16. After performing a hip-hop routine to secure his spot in the top 10, he was pilloried by the judges for his attempt at jazz funk with partner Sophie Pittman. So he had more to prove than anyone else during “Top 10 Perform, Round 2.” Watch their routine above.
The good news for Hoyt was that, after being thrown in the deep end with way-out-of-his-comfort-zone hip-hop and funk routines, this time he got to settle into a contemporary number choreographed by Travis Wall to Billie Eilish‘s “When the Party’s Over.” It still required Hoyt to stretch himself physically and emotionally — at first he had some trouble partnering with Pittman while rehearsing their number — but Wall thought it could be their “redeeming moment.”
Wall was right. Judge Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval praised Hoyt for his emotional connection to the dance. So did Laurieann Gibson, who added that Pittman was an “incredible storyteller.” Nigel Lythgoe thought Hoyt was “marvelous” and Pittman was “brilliant.” And Mary Murphy was “so proud” of Hoyt for his creative growth and said Pittman was “liquid gold.”
But the celebration was short lived. After they received their praise from the judges it was time for host Cat Deeley to reveal the results: Pittman was safe from elimination, but Hoyt was one of the bottom two men. Later on we learned that Ezra Sosa was the other male dancer at the bottom. While the judges adored Hoyt’s work this week, they ultimately decided to keep the more consistent Sosa in the competition instead. But at least Hoyt got to go out on a high note.
