Editors say ‘Succession’ will win Golden Globe for Best Drama Series, but watch out for ‘The Crown,’ ‘The Morning Show’

Last month when we polled Gold Derby’s staff editors about what would win Best Drama Series at the 2020 Golden Globes, “The Crown” was the favorite. However, with the nominations just around the corner (they’ll be announced December 9), the majority of our editors now believe HBO’s “Succession” will prevail, with Netflix’s “The Crown” and Apple’s “The Morning Show” rounding out their top three. Do you agree with the predictions of our website crew? Sound off down in the comments section.

Joyce Eng, Marcus James Dixon, Zach Laws, Rob Licuria, Daniel Montgomery, Matt Noble and Tom O’Neil are the seven editors who have “Succession” in their #1 positions to claim the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series. Even though the buzzy series was snubbed for its first season, Kieran Culkin still received a surprise nomination, proving voters were watching. For its heralded second year you can also expect both male leadsBrian Cox and Jeremy Strong — to earn Globe bids.

Chris Beachum and Susan Wloszczyna think “The Crown” will triumph. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association previously awarded the first season of “The Crown” three years ago, but now its entire cast has since been overhauled to reflect the aging of the royal characters. Olivia Colman took over for Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, Tobias Menzies has replaced Matt Smith as Prince Philip, and Helena Bonham Carter stepped in for Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret. Will Golden Globes voters embrace the new cast members?

Finally, Riley Chow and Paul Sheehan believe “The Morning Show” will make history for Apple TV+. Golden Globes voters are notorious for being the first to reward new shows and stars, and nothing is newer than the recent debut of the media company’s streaming service. Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell are also likely acting nominees for the drama series about a popular AM news program that’s shaken up in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal.

With last year’s nominees “The Americans,” “Bodyguard” and “Homecoming” being ineligible, that opens three spots for new and returning shows to squeak into the 2020 Golden Globes lineup. Our editors think those slots will go to “Killing Eve” and “Pose,” with “Game of Thrones,” “Big Little Lies,” “Watchmen” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” on the bubble.
