“Near the end it got insane where we were playing three characters throughout a day,” said Emma Stone about her multiple roles in Netflix’s mind-bending “Maniac.” The limited series spans various dreamscapes and genres as its characters undergo an experimental drug trial. Stone discussed the series along with co-star Justin Theroux and creator Patrick Somerville during an Emmy FYSEE event in New York City on May 7. Watch Stone discuss her performance — or really, performances — above.
Stone primarily plays Annie Landsberg, who forces her way into the drug trial to get the pills she needs to cope with the death of her sister (Julia Garner). But she gets more than she bargained for as the drugs take her through various dreams and fantasies. Stone explained, “If you were to split your personality into elements of yourself — the part of yourself that lies in order to win someone over, or the part of yourself that is desperate to get past something but really would rather punish yourself for it instead — all of these psychological elements that we all have in different ways. It was so cool to take one person and split her into these other people.”
But there was one character she hated: “The elf in episode eight. I don’t like that stuff at all,” she said. Playing fantasy roles like that doesn’t interest her, but Somerville conceived of the character with a twist: Annie hates it as much as Stone does. “She’s really upset about being an elf, so that was awesome.” But I guess that means we shouldn’t expect to see her in any “Lord of the Rings” or “Game of Thrones” spin-offs anytime soon.
