Streaming giant Netflix has yet to win a series trophy at the Emmy Awards, but that could all change this year if Gold Derby’s Experts are correct. Fifteen of these 20 prognosticators from major media outlets believe that “When They See Us” will claim victory for Best Limited Series on September 22. Ava DuVernay‘s intimate look at the 1989 Central Park jogger case, which delves into the investigations, the trials, the incarcerations and the ultimate releases of who are now known as the Exonerated 5, streamed on May 31, the final day of eligibility for the 2019 Emmys.
Here are the 15 Emmy Experts that have “When They See Us” in their #1 positions for Best Limited Series: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Eric Deggans (NPR), Chris Harnick (E!), Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Robert Rorke (New York Post), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Michael Schneider (Variety), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ben Travers (Indiewire), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).
Undeterred, four Experts believe HBO’s “Chernobyl” will prevail on Emmy night: Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com) and Anne Thompson (Indiewire). This true-to-life miniseries about the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster topped all limited series with 19 Emmy nominations this year, more than the 16 for “When They See Us.”
Finally, Kelly Lawler (USA Today) stands alone in predicting Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora” will claim Emmy victory. This program about the 2015 New York prison break dominated the early precursor awards for lead actress Patricia Arquette, who won the Golden Globe, SAG Award and Critics’ Choice Award for her transformative role as prison employee Tilly Mitchell.
