This is what we call a landslide. All of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are confident “Game of Thrones” is about to tie the four-time record for Best Drama Series that’s currently held by “Hill Street Blues” (1981-84), “L.A. Law” (1987, 1989-91), “The West Wing” (2000-03) and “Mad Men” (2008-11). That’s right — there’s not a single outlier in the bunch that thinks anything else can prevail on September 22, but there’s slightly good news for BBC America’s “Killing Eve” as that has the most #2 votes from our pundits.
Here are the 22 Emmy Experts that predict a victory for HBO’s fantasy epic: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Jen Chaney (Vulture), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Chris Harnick (E!), Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Ed Martin (Media Village), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Robert Rorke (New York Post), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Michael Schneider (Variety), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Ben Travers (Indiewire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).
“GoT” earned a whopping 32 nominations this year, an all-time Emmy record for a single season, including bids for Best Actress (Emilia Clarke), Best Actor (Kit Harington), Best Supporting Actress (Maisie Williams, Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie and Sophie Turner), Best Supporting Actor (Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Alfie Allen) and Best Guest Actress (Carice van Houten).
“Killing Eve” is in the runner-up position for Best Drama Series, according to our savvy prognosticators. Based on Luke Jennings‘ series of “Villanelle” novels, the program stars Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer as an MI5 agent and a psychopathic killer, respectively. Phoebe Waller-Bridge of “Fleabag” fame was the head writer of the first season, with Emerald Fennell taking over for Season 2.
