Readers react to Emmy nominations for comedy: ‘Screaming’ for joy over ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ but Tituss Burgess snub was ‘vile’

Our readers were mostly overjoyed by the Emmy nominations for comedy — more so than for drama, which they’re describing as a mixed bag. Shows like “Fleabag” and “Russian Doll” exceeded our expectations, while “Schitt’s Creek” took us by surprise in a big way with its nominations for Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor (Eugene Levy) and Best Comedy Actress (Catherine O’Hara). Scroll down to read more reactions from our forums, and join their discussion here.

Now that the nominations have been announced (check out the list here), our readers are having a change of heart about the race for Best Comedy Series. It looked like “Veep” would be the show to beat for its seventh and final season, but it under-performed, earning only nine nominations, which was way down from the 17 bids it picked up for its last eligible season in 2017. Could that mean “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” are the shows to beat? Could Julia Louis-Dreyfus be upset by defending champ Rachel Brosnahan (“Maisel”), or newcomers Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) and Natasha Lyonne (“Russian Doll”)?

Our readers weren’t happy about everything. They thought it was “vile” for the TV academy to snub Tituss Burgess for the final season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” and it was a shame that Dan Levy didn’t get acting or writing noms for “Schitt’s Creek” either. Boo! Hiss! See what else our forum posters got up in arms about below.

Best Comedy Series

Pulp: “So Comedy Series is now ‘Barry’ vs. ‘Fleabag’?”

ginnala: “‘Fleabag’ over-performed, it could win.”

Zooey the Dreamer: “‘Fleabag’ is NOT winning. It’s British. They won’t let this happen. ‘Barry’ is a possibility, but never vote against the previous winner. After all, ‘Maisel’ has never lost … The top award now is voted by everybody in the academy. ‘Maisel’s’ 20 nods just show it has the broad support and I believe it will repeat.”

ospencer: “‘Maisel’ is still in the race. It got in everywhere but writing. It’s ‘Barry’ vs. ‘Maisel.'”

Libby: “I’m just so, so happy to see ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ ‘Russian Doll’ and ‘Dead to Me’ get noms. Too bad for ‘The Other Two,’ however.”

chrisanegron: “I’m still screaming over ‘Schitt’s Creek’s’ nominations.”

Best Comedy Actress

AayaanUpadhyaya: “Pheobe Waller-Bridge is totally winning Lead Actress isn’t she?”

ospencer: “Lead actress is Julia Louis-Dreyfus for sure, don’t overthink it.”

probablyROB: “I’m just here to gloat about the Christina Applegate, Natasha Lyonne, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge nominations.”

Atypical: “Sad for ‘Insecure’ and Issa Rae though. No Allison Janney or Lily Tomlin either. Shocking!”

ChargerFan: “Pamela Adlon is sublime on ‘Better Things.’ It really is a shame that they dropped her this year.”

Best Comedy Actor

sofan: “No goodbye nom for Jim Parsons, guess he had his share at the Emmys.”

Jake: “William H. Macy lost his annual ‘Shameless’ nomination due to Felicity’s scandal. I was surprised to see Don Cheadle nominated.”

Best Comedy Supporting Actress

Tyler: “Wait … Chlumsky might actually really have a chance at winning. Clifford and Colman vote split, Borstein and Hinkle vote split, Gilpin’s show didn’t make it. That leaves McKinnon, Goldberg, and Chlumsky. This is without a doubt the best category.”

JGibson: “Putting D’Arcy Carden to announce nominations and not including her in a 8-slot field was cruel.”

Rachel: “Sarah Goldberg, Stephen Root, AND Anthony Carrigan got in for ‘Barry’ and Sian Clifford got in for ‘Fleabag.’ Help me, I cannot stop the tears. SO DESERVING. My wish came true.”

Best Comedy Supporting Actor

AWDubay: “Dan Levy and Tituss Burgess not making supporting actor is a shame.”

Stegeo: “[‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’] missed in every major category. I sort of expected it, but poor Tituss, one of the best comedy supporting actors of the decade.”

Atypical: “They had the nerve to snub Tituss Burgess in his last year of eligibility. That’s vile, Emmys.”
