“You heard it here first,” I tell fellow Gold Derby contributors Luca Giliberti and Zach Laws after boldly declaring that “ ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ is just going to take everything and ‘Veep’ will go home empty-handed from the telecast ceremony” in our predictions slugfest about the Emmy races for Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series (watch above). Although Laws responds, “You guys are crazy” and “You guys are out of your minds,” our panel is in agreement about what the seven nominees for Best Comedy Series will be; we are merely predicting the seven leading contenders in Gold Derby’s aggregate odds, which means that we are betting on breakthrough nominations by “The Good Place,” “The Kominsky Method” and “Russian Doll” at the expense of perennial nominees “black-ish” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”
The odds peg “Killing Eve” as the most formidable challenger on the drama side to “Game of Thrones,” but Giliberti is more wary of “Ozark,” citing its “very impressive” 14 guild nominations and reminding our panel that “Killing Eve” “only got two nominations last year.” I contend that “Bodyguard” will have the best chance at upsetting “Game of Thrones” — if it gets nominated, which would be unexpected, according to the odds. Also ranking just outside the top seven is “Pose,” which Laws is predicting for a nomination, citing its “passionate fan base” and how its network FX recently “has been able to do very well at the Emmys in terms of nominations.”
