The last time 26-year-old magician Eric Chien appeared on “America’s Got Talent,” he wowed the judges with his card tricks that included making them change colors, slice in half and disappear. He returned during the Judge Cuts 4 episode and performed several coin tricks in front of Simon Cowell, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union, Howie Mandel and Jay Leno, who all voted unanimously to send him through to the live shows at the Dolby Theatre. Is Eric talented enough to follow in the footsteps of former winners Mat Franco (Season 9) and Shin Lim (Season 13)? Watch the “AGT” performance video above and read the judges’ comments below.
Julianne: “You have this like wonderment about you. You make all of us feel like anything is possible. Oh my gosh, it was amazing.”
Howie: “I think it was more spectacular. You were less nervous than your original audition, so I feel that you have upped your game and I want to fight for you to be one of the six remaining acts that can go through.”
Simon: “I actually along with my son Eric, we do believe in things like magic. When I see that two feet away from me, it’s not a trick. You know, you have to believe. I would say, I think the close-up stuff is great for a while, but then if you really want to go to Vegas you’ve gotta be able to do something big. I think you’ve got a shot, but it’s one of these nights where people have stepped up better than we thought, so we’ll see what happens.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Magician Eric Chien performed one of his favorite acts for the judges tonight. That act involved very little personality from Eric, instead mostly silent movements of coins appearing and disappearing from sight and then brought together in the end by circling it back to the circle he drew at the beginning to bring the first coin into the act. The judges did seem impressed by his act, but Simon said that if he wants to go to Vegas he’ll have to think bigger.”
