Gabrielle Union (‘AGT’) refers to country teen Ansley Burns as ‘America’s underdog’ after flubbing lyrics in semifinals [WATCH]

Ansley Burns, the only wild card to make it through the “America’s Got Talent” quarterfinals, returned in the semifinals with her take on Carrie Underwood‘s “Cry Pretty.” The performance was noticeably shaky, as the 13-year-old South Carolina native flubbed a lyric and sang off-pitch. Still, judge Gabrielle Union raved that she was “America’s underdog.” Do you think Ansley will go on to become the first-ever wild card to win NBC’s reality TV show? Watch the “AGT” video above, read the judges’ comments below and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s results show.

Julianne Hough: “Well, there is no denying that America loves Ansley Burns. You are a ray of sunshine in this sometimes gloomy world and I think that that’s why America stands behind you, because they see themselves in you, that they want to root for you. And I think that this song may have overpowered you a little bit, but at the same time I’m super proud of you for the fact that you got to choose your song, how you wanted it, and what you wanted. So I’m proud of you, girl.”

Sean Hayes: “I think you’re amazing. I can’t believe how young you are, and the breath control. I sing not nearly as well as you. There’s a singer from the 1970s which you’ll never learn named Karen Carpenter and she could take one breath and sing for five minutes straight and you have that same thing. That was just incredible. You’re amazing.”

Gabrielle Union: “You know, Ansley Burns, you are one of my favorite acts this season. Every time I see you in the halls I’m like, Ansley Burns! And I think America has that same thing. When we see you we just want to root for you. You are America’s underdog and you let out that big voice and hopefully America responds. I thought you did a good job, kiddo.”

Howie Mandel: “There’s no denying that you’re adorable. You should have your own series on one of those kids’ shows. But that song was too big for you. I think that that song did not do you justice. I think you’re a star and I love you. And they don’t love me right now. But that’s okay, I’m honest.”

Simon Cowell: “Well, starting off they turned you into a piece of wheat. You know, that whole creative, so you were kind of lost there. This is what I think, Ansley. Forget the song choice for one moment. Your story before summed up everything about you. You are gutsy, you are adorable, so let me ask please the American audience to judge you through on your entire time on ‘America’s Got Talent.'”

In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Ansley Burns has had an atypical journey this season — being stopped twice by Simon mid-performance and then being eliminated in Judges’ Cuts, added as a wild card for the Quarterfinals and having to earn the Dunkin’ Save to make the Semifinals. Tonight she took the stage with a Carrie Underwood cover with what turned out to be a pretty shaky performance, including a very obvious flub in the lyrics. Julianne thought that the song overpowered her abilities and Gabrielle referred to her as ‘America’s underdog’ and hopes that they’ll come out for her in the votes.”
