Gold Derby’s staff editors who cover awards year-round rarely agree on anything … unless it comes to predicting Best Comedy Series at the 2020 Golden Globes. As of this writing all 10 editors predict “Fleabag” will win the top series prize, which translates to leading 16/5 racetrack odds. Amazon’s quirky comedy series, based on Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s one-woman show, recently romped through the Emmy Awards by winning trophies for series, actress, writing, directing, editing and casting. Will the Golden Globes be next?
The 10 editors who forecast a victory for “Fleabag” at the 2020 Golden Globes are: Paul Sheehan, Chris Beachum, Marcus James Dixon, Joyce Eng, Daniel Montgomery, Susan Wloszczyna, Rob Licuria, Matt Noble, Zach Laws and Riley Chow. Last year Sheehan had the best score (75.93%) when predicting the Golden Globe TV nominations.
One potential obstacle in “Fleabag’s” way is the fact that Golden Globes voters are notorious for being the first to reward new shows and stars. With the Emmys already taking care of “Fleabag” this past September, might the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decide to go their own way to avoid looking like an Emmy rerun?
Based on our editors’ rankings, the rest of the nominees for Best Comedy Series will be Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (9/2 odds), Netflix’s “Russian Doll” (5/1 odds), HBO’s “Barry” (11/2 odds) and Netflix’s “The Politician” (13/2 odds). The only show from this group not yet to contend at the Emmys is “The Politician,” Ryan Murphy‘s latest production starring Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Lange, among others.
Other potential nominations for “Fleabag” at the 2020 Golden Globes include lead actress Waller-Bridge, supporting actor Andrew Scott and supporting actresses Olivia Colman and Sian Clifford. All but Scott recently received Emmy bids. “Fleabag’s” first season was eligible at the 2017 Golden Globes but was completely overlooked, just as it was at many other awards shows.
