Last month Emmy voters exploded over HBO’s “Chernobyl,” awarding it with 10 trophies including series, writing and directing. Not to be outdone, Netflix’s “When They See Us” nabbed statuettes for lead actor Jharrel Jerome and casting. Gold Derby’s staff editors who cover awards year-round now believe the Golden Globes will follow suit in rewarding the program about the 1986 nuclear meltdown. At least, nine of them do. The remaining editor goes rogue in predicting a victory for Ava DuVernay‘s true-to-life adaptation of the Central Park Five story.
The nine staffers who believe “Chernobyl” will prevail are Chris Beachum, Riley Chow, Joyce Eng, Marcus James Dixon, Zach Laws, Rob Licuria, Daniel Montgomery, Paul Sheehan and Susan Wloszczyna.
The lone holdout who picks “When They See Us” to win is Matt Noble, though he does have “Chernobyl” in his runner-up position.
As for our Top 24 Users, those who did the best predicting last year’s Golden Globe nominations, a whopping 20 forecast a victory for “Chernobyl.” The remaining four are backing “When They See Us.”
According to our editors’ 2020 Golden Globes predictions for Best TV Movie/Limited Series, “Chernobyl” has leading 16/5 racetrack odds to win. “When They See Us” comes in second place with 39/10 odds, followed by FX’s “Fosse/Verdon” at 9/2 odds, Netflix’s “El Camino” at 8/1 odds and Netfli’s “Unbelievable” at 8/1 odds. See more of our editors’ odds and rankings.
But could an upset be on the horizon? Don’t forget, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves being the first organization to anoint new shows and stars. Since “Chernobyl,” “When They See Us” and “Fosse/Verdon” are already Emmy winners, the Golden Globes could look to spread the wealth to “El Camino” (the highly anticipated “Breaking Bad” telefilm), “Unbelievable” (the true story about serial rape cases) or something else entirely. What do you think?
