“Sam wants us to be as unconventional as possible, but then yes, there are storytelling-type of rules that we stick to,” Rosanne Tan tells Gold Derby in an exclusive interview (watch the video above) about editing under director and executive producer Sam Esmail. They are working “for most of this year” on the upcoming final season of “Mr. Robot” for USA and Tan teases, “It’s going to be amazing.”
She contends at the 2019 Emmys for her work on “Homecoming” for Amazon Prime. Although she cut both its pilot and finale, Tan has instead submitted the episode titled “Redwood” for Best Drama Editing consideration, having already been nominated by the American Cinema Editors for that fourth episode of the debut season. The Eddie Award nominee explains, “It was a good combo of everything. I love how the story was told with the medicine and I had fun with that. It was like my old music video editing type of fun; it’s like how can we tell a story with all these images and also make it fun and interesting?”
“I’m rooting for two of them especially,” Tan says from her uniquely comprehensive vantage point about which “Homecoming” cast members deserve Emmy nominations. “Going between two timelines, you really have to bring it,” she explains about the challenge that Best Drama Actress hopeful Julia Roberts faced. Tan remarks about Best Drama Supporting Actor contender Shea Whigham, “It’s just the little nuances that he brought to the character (the glasses, the way he gets up from a chair). He’s so amazing and I thought he did a lot for the show.”
