The last time 14-year-old Benicio Bryant performed on “America’s Got Talent,” judge Howie Mandel gave him a hard time for choosing to sing an original song. This time around Benicio stayed true to his artistry and took on another original tune, “Fall Apart,” and had all of the judges — yes, even Howie — raving about his performance. “I take back everything I said,” Howie proclaimed during Tuesday’s quarterfinals episode. Do you think Benicio will advance to the next round? Watch the live “AGT” video above, read the judges’ comments below and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s results show.
Simon Cowell: “Benicio, that was pretty outstanding, I’m gonna be honest with you. What I loved about you was we just saw you as the person you are, from what you wore, the song choice, the lyric. It was just very cool, relevant, smart choice, great taste. I’m gonna be seeing you in the final in two weeks time.”
Julianne Hough: “I hands down agree with Simon. I feel like those lyrics are so poignant and sometimes in pop songs people just say words and you’re like, ‘What did that even mean?’ But you just created an entire world for us to join, so thank you so much.”
Sean Hayes: “I’m completely obsessed with you and your talent. I just think you’re phenomenal and I feel like I can now call you Beni and I wish I was a jet that can fly you right into the finals.”
Gabrielle Union: “Benicio, you are a world class talent. Two weeks in a row, two original songs and two hit songs. You are a star, my friend. Please vote, this kid deserves it.”
Howie Mandel: “Okay, Beni, first of all, I want to say that last week I gave you a hard time about an original song and I said don’t sing an original song, and you went again and you sang an original song. I take back everything I said. I love this song. I love you. I truly believe that you’re the biggest star that can come out of this season. You are the biggest star. You’re someplace between Troye Sivan and Harry Styles. That’s how I see you. You are beautiful. You sound beautiful. I think you can win this thing. Good luck, buddy.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “For the final performance of the night Benicio Bryant tried his hand at a big vocal and while he was a bit off key, the judges still raised in a standing ovation for him at the end. Simon called it a ‘pretty outstanding’ performance and posited that he will for sure make the final. Julianne commented on Benicio’s songwriting abilities by calling it a pop song that isn’t often made, but is poignant. Even Howie had to eat his words about not singing their own songs because tonight it worked for him.”
