Just go ahead and engrave Regina King’s name on the Independent Spirit Award trophy already

The Best Supporting Actress Oscar race might be a wee bit more uncertain, but there is no doubt who is taking the corresponding prize at the Independent Spirit Awards. Regina King is the overwhelming favorite in our odds to add yet another trophy to her collection for “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

With 3/1 odds, King is way ahead of “Leave No Trace” star Thomasin McKenzie (39/10), “Private Life”‘s Kayli Carter (9/2), “Nancy”‘s J. Cameron-Smith (9/2) and “A Bread Factory”‘s Tyne Daly (9/2). She’s also the only Oscar nominee in the mix, so voters won’t pass up the chance to anoint someone who will probably take home a little gold man in 28 hours’ time from Saturday afternoon.

After garnering a slew of critics awards, the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice Award, King has had a quiet couple of weeks away from the podium since she wasn’t nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards or BAFTA. But it’s shaping up to be a big weekend for the three-time Emmy champ between the Spirit Awards and the Oscars. She’s still the consensus pick to win the Oscar on Sunday despite those SAG and BAFTA snubs, with 16/5 odds to prevail.

King is one of three potential Spirit Awards acting winners who could be giving two speeches this weekend. Glenn Close (“The Wife”) and Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) are also predicted to win Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively; however, only Close is also expected to win the Oscar, as Grant trails Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) there. None of the Spirits’ Best Actor nominees are up for the Oscar.
