Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon (‘American Idol’) powers through this private ‘Blackbird’ performance even though he lost his voice [WATCH]

One day after “American Idol’s” Disney night, the Top 8 singers of Season 17 held a private listening session for journalists and influencers at EastWest Studios in Hollywood. All of the finalists gave acoustic performances for the intimate crowd, including Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon who had completely lost his voice that day. (Perhaps Katy Perry‘s sea witch Urusula was to blame?) Even voiceless, Jeremiah delivered a haunting rendition of The Beatles‘ “Blackbird” that proved why he’s one of the front-runners to join the “American Idol” winners list (watch above).

“What a crazy experience,” Jeremiah declared when he first took the stage in the blue-hued studio. The “American Idol” band was in place behind him since they accompanied many of the other finalists, but Jeremiah opted to go solo by playing only his guitar.

Jeremiah’s “Idol” journey began at his audition with his original song “Almost Heaven.” The 26-year-old church janitor easily sailed through to Hollywood where he took on “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” and “Beautiful.” In Hawaii Jeremiah performed “Landslide” where he made it into the Top 20. He then belted out “Make You Feel My Love” for his showcase solo and “Time After Time” for his duet with Cynthia Erivo.

When the live shows kicked in, Jeremiah sang “We All Fall in Love Sometimes” during Top 14 week and “Candle on the Water” during Top 10 week. Much of Jeremiah’s story on the show has focused around the fact that his religious family doesn’t accept his lifestyle, but things seem to be moving in the right direction as his sister recently joined him in Disneyland.

Sunday’s episode on ABC will feature the Top 8 — Jeremiah, Laine Hardy, Madison VanDenburg, Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Walker Burroughs, Alyssa Raghu and Wade Cotaperforming Queen songs with a little help from mentor/”American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert. Who do you think will excel and who will falter?
