Jessica Lange on her return to raising monsters in ‘AHS’: ‘It was fun!’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW]

“I was put on this earth to raise the monsters,” Jessica Lange confessed in “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” when she reprised her Emmy-winning role as Constance Lange, the mother of a psycho serial killer and grandmother of the Antichrist. In our webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above), she tells Gold Derby that the role gave her the chance to take her acting chops “to the limit,” which she found rewarding in a few ways.

“It was fun to go back and revisit that story and that character,” she says. It was also rather nice that she was acknowledged with a new Emmy nomination as Best Drama Guest Actress.

Lange has played four characters so far in the “AHS” series, also winning an Emmy as supreme witch in “Coven,” but this first role was special to her.

“When (producer/writer) Ryan Murphy first called me about doing that character, it was a very difficult time in my personal life because I had come to the end of a 30-year relationship and I was completely disoriented,” she recalls. “Going into that series somehow revitalized me, made me understand that there was a whole way of working that I had never done before. How can I describe it? You never had time to prepare. You never knew where your character was going. You never knew when you were going to get the next script. Sometimes you’d only get it the morning when you’d start shooting that episode, so it forced me to work with complete and total abandon and I found that, for that moment in my life, it was exactly what I needed.

“So I’m forever grateful to Ryan for giving me that opportunity to create that character at that time. And so it was exciting” to return to portraying Constance.
