Jimmy Kimmel has doubled down on his Emmy Awards chances this year. He’s been nominated for his ABC variety talk series “Jimmy Kimmel Live” once again, an achievement he’s had every year since 2012. He also teamed up this past season with legendary TV producer Norman Lear for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” which now competes as Best Variety Special (Live).
“For someone who’s won no awards, I know a lot about awards,” jokes Kimmel at a special event honoring both of his shows in contention (watch the exclusive video above). On the past two weeks of the late night program, he’s had a string of 2019 Emmy nominees such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Ben Stiller as guests, and he always knows their stats and awards history. He adds, “Truth be told, a do a little bit of homework. It’s not like I just have this vast knowledge.” Although he does remind that he’s hosted at least 15 live awards ceremonies in his career.
For the May special, Lear and Kimmel plus their fellow producers recreated two episodes from “All in the Family” (starring Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei) and “The Jeffersons” (starring Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes). The ratings bonanza has led to news there will be at least two more events over the next few months. Kimmel can’t reveal too much at this point: “We can’t really say. We’re not being coy; we just have to work some things out. It’s going to be good!”
Similar to his cousin Sal, who co-hosts the sports betting show “Lock It In” on Fox Sports, Kimmel gives odds on which of his two Emmy contenders might take home the trophy next month.
