As much as we all love host Cat Deeley, she lied to us Monday night as the fourth episode of the 16th season of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” nearly concluded. She promised that we would see the fifth and final episode of auditions next week before the Academy rounds.
OK, she didn’t lie. Our Cat would never intentionally tell a fib. She would sooner shave her gorgeous head of hair than not be honest. She probably just didn’t know at the time when the show was taped that the fifth episode was pushed to July 8.
Instead, the network schedule reveals that an encore of the first episode of the season will be aired. It might be that not as many viewers will be watching because of the July 4 holiday next week, so why waste a fresh batch of whirling dervishes and hip-hop artists when they won’t have the audience that they deserve.
If you feel the need to re-watch the show that first introduced us to judges Laurieann Gibson and Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval, who appeared as a contestant on season 3. And stay tuned to re-watch the final audition on the show featuring contemporary dancer Gino Coscullvela, 18, from Miami.
At age 9, he appeared on the TV show “Dance Moms ” had to kiss a less-than-thrilled Maddie Ziegler. He did an emotional routine to “For All We Know” and defied gravity for the majority of his performance that was packed with spins, leaps, handstands and tumbling. Gino came out on top of all the dancers in our poll of the best routines from the first three episodes, with 43% picking him as their favorite. Judge Nigel Lythgoe said he would be surprised if he didn’t make the top 10 while Laurieann dubbed him “Baby Baryshnikov.”
