“What drug are you on?!” Gold Derby Editor-in-Chief Tom O’Neil shouts at Senior Editor Marcus James Dixon for daring to predict that the two “Killing Eve” leading nominees — Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer — will split the Emmy vote for Best Drama Actress. Senior Editors Daniel Montgomery and Joyce Eng also join in the battle over which other nominee may benefit from a potential vote-split in this red-hot Emmy race. Besides Oh and Comer, the other five Emmy nominees are Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Robin Wright (“House of Cards”), Mandy Moore (“This Is Us”) and Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”). Last year’s champion was Claire Foy, who prevailed for her final appearance on “The Crown.”
“I am a huge Sandra Oh fan,” begins Dixon. “If I was a voter I would probably vote for Sandra Oh. But she is in a lot of trouble because Jodie Comer is nominated. Look, when Sandra won the Golden Globe and SAG Award, she wasn’t up against Jodie. But what happened at the BAFTAs? Jodie and Sandra were both nominated and Jodie beat her! So both ladies are going to get votes, I know that.”
When O’Neil interjects that “most ‘Killing Eve’ fans say it’s all about Sandra,” Eng counters by arguing, “I think Jodie was better in Season 2. Sandra won most of her awards for Season 1.” Eng then concedes, “I still have Sandra at number one, but she is primarily riding that overdue narrative. She’s never won before … and she could be the first Asian actress to win this category.”
Montgomery reminds viewers that Jodie “is the winking devil” on BBC America’s cat-and-mouse drama. He adds, “She has the bigger, showier role. Even though she’s playing a psychopath who has no emotions, she’s doing accents, she’s doing different personas. I can see very easily Jodie pulling votes from Sandra or potentially winning.”
Dixon ultimately believes that Linney will win for Netflix’s gritty drama series, despite O’Neil bringing up her fourth-place Gold Derby odds. “I’m gonna put my 500-point bet on that and I’m gonna beat you all!” Dixon laughs. Don’t forget, Linney has won four Emmys for every character she’s been nominated for, so Emmy voters are clearly gaga for her.
