Was Lady Gaga ‘Born’ to win at the MTV Movie and TV Awards?

Lady Gaga (“A Star is Born”) may have lost the Best Actress Oscar to Olivia Colman (“The Favourite“), but she did win Best Original Song for “Shallow.” Now she may have one more chance to get up on the awards stage for her performance in the musical drama. She’s nominated for Best Performance in a Movie at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. Does she have it in the bag?

Perhaps surprisingly, she’s the only nomination for the blockbuster film. You’d think MTV would have nominated her co-star Bradley Cooper, who’s already a three-time Golden Popcorn champ. And a chart-topping, Grammy-winning musical from one of the decade’s biggest pop stars seems like it would have been an especially good fit for a Best Movie nomination, especially when you consider that MTV has showered Lady Gaga with prizes at their Video Music Awards.

But maybe the relative shortfall for “A Star is Born” will help Lady Gaga more than it hurts. Fans don’t get to decide the nominees, but they do get to pick the winners by voting online, and the film’s sole nomination means devoted fans have nowhere else to go if they want to honor it. When you combine that with the legion of Lady Gaga stans who are already out there, it may be tough to beat her.

Indeed, Lady Gaga gets leading odds of 82/25 as of this writing. Those odds are based on the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have entered their forecasts here in our predictions center thus far. But there might be another musical contender who could threaten Lady Gaga for the title. Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) also has passionate fans, and his film was also a blockbuster hit. He ranks second in our predictions with 19/5 odds, so don’t underestimate the fellow Oscar winner.
