Guild awards scorecard: ‘Escape at Dannemora’ builds momentum opposite other limited series and TV movies

The Assassination of Gianni Versace” and star Darren Criss continued their awards sweeps into 2019 at the annual awards bestowed by industry guilds and societies that share voters with the Emmys. (See the full list of this year’s guild awards and nominations for limited series and TV movies below.) Comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was the only program that was awarded by more guilds. “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” did about as well as last year’s leader among limited series and movies — “Big Little Lies” scored seven wins out of 15 nominations from 11 guilds.

Although “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” proved to have staying power, fellow Best Limited Series Emmy nominees “The Alienist,” “Genius” and “Patrick Melrose” performed unspectacularly with more distance between their broadcasts and voting, as well as without such aggressive for-your-consideration campaigns.

With the guilds generally using the calendar year for eligibility, those shows also faced off against several programs that they did not meet at the 2018 Emmys because they are instead eligible for the upcoming 2019 ceremony. “Sharp Objects” and “Maniac” received nominations from all four above-the-line guilds, but came up short in terms of wins overall, each only winning a single trophy below the line, for music supervision in both cases. “Escape at Dannemora” did not receive as many nominations as either, but it won the majority that it had (including Patricia Arquette’s Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Movie/Limited Actress pictured above). Perhaps visibility had not peaked at the time of nominations, with its feature-length finale not airing until December 30. “The Haunting of Hill House” received only three nominations and no wins, but Netflix submitted it for the guilds as a drama instead of a limited series, so it rarely competed against anything that it will be up against for the upcoming Emmys.

34 programs that qualify under the Emmys as limited series or movies were recognized by the guilds this year, although it remains to be seen if all, especially the Netflix movies, are even submitted for consideration. The eligibility period for awards was January 1 to December 31, 2018 unless otherwise noted; all nominations are below:
