Lionel Richie surprises everyone by saving Uche on ‘American Idol’: ‘That’s my pick!’ [WATCH]

American Idol” judge Lionel Richie was so entertained by Uche‘s “save-me” song of Rihanna‘s “Diamonds” that he jumped the gun by instantly saving him during Monday’s Top 14 results episode. Instead of giving a normal critique of Uche’s performance, Lionel walked up on stage and escorted the 24-year-old Sugarland, Texas resident to safety, proclaiming “That’s my pick!” when host Ryan Seacrest asked what he was doing. Did Lionel make the right choice by saving Uche from elimination and placing him into the Top 10? Vote down in our poll below.

Lionel was supposed to wait until after the commercial break to make his choice, as fellow judges Luke Bryan (he saved Dimitrius Graham) and Katy Perry (she saved Alyssa Raghu) both did, but he was so impressed with Uche’s stage presence that he just couldn’t wait. It’s a remarkable turn of events since Lionel originally passed on Uche back in his audition before he changed his mind.

“We are not in the singing business, we are in the entertainment business,” Lionel told the crowd after he joined a teary-eyed Uche on stage. “A lot of people can sing. Very few can sing and perform. This is an entertainer. And where an entertainer belongs — follow me, young man.” Lionel then walked with Uche to the side of the stage where the rest of the Top 10 were sitting.

Ryan excitedly proclaimed, “Lionel Richie, in that moment, without a commercial break, live, just put Uche in the Top 10, ladies and gentlemen!” Over the shouts and screams of the audience, Ryan continued, “When we come back, Katy you get a pick, Luke you get a pick. We’re going to round out the Top 10 live on ‘American Idol,’ do not move!”

Since none of the judges opted to save fellow bottom contestants Ashley Hess, Eddie Island, Evelyn Cormier and Riley Thompson, that meant they were all eliminated from the competition. Which one of these singers was robbed? And did Lionel make the right decision? Sound off down in the comments section.
