Emmy shocker! Luke Kirby upsets to win Best Comedy Guest Actor for ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’

Against all odds, Luke Kirby just won Best Comedy Guest Actor at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys for his role as real-life stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” (See full list of winners.) Kirby’s fellow “Maisel” guest star Jane Lynch also prevailed over in Best Comedy Guest Actress, making it a great night for the Amazon dramedy.

Many awards pundits thought Kirby might split the vote with co-star Rufus Sewell, but that proved not to be the case. There were also four guys from “Saturday Night Live” nominated (John Mulaney, Adam Sandler, Matt Damon and Robert De Niro) and one from “Veep” (Peter MacNicol).

Kirby submitted the episode “All Alone” to Emmy voters, the Season 2 finale. That’s the one where Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) is booted offstage for talking about a friend’s pregnancy, then meets Lenny a bar. Midge and Lenny talk about their struggles in the business, including his legal troubles in Chicago and being flat broke from all the court fees. Lenny later appears on Steve Allen‘s primetime show.

Recurring “Veep” guest star MacNicol was hoping to prevail after previously having his Emmy nomination rescinded because of a technicality, but now he’ll go home empty-handed for the departing laffer. Perhaps his small amount of screen time hurt his chances with Emmy voters?

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” broke Emmy records last year by becoming the first comedy series to win eight trophies in a single year. Thanks to its phenomenal showing on Sunday night, it’s possible the show can now break its own record at next week’s Primetime ceremony.
