Monday night during the Top 8 performance episode of “The Voice,” pop singer Maelyn Jarmon of Team John Legend took on Rihanna‘s “Stay” for America’s vote. As the only impartial coach in the semi-finals, Adam Levine made a bold announcement by saying that Maelyn “definitely should win” the show. Adam Levine: “Amazing, amazing. I obviously don’t have a horse in this race at this point. I’m just gonna say, you definitely should win ‘The Voice.’ I believe you should win ‘The Voice.’ The reason why is very simple: look at the name of the show. You embody what the show is all about, what it has been about for all of these seasons. There’s no reason in my opinion and I’m sure John’s why you should definitely not win this thing. It just seems like you’re the absolute front-runner and the best singer we’ve got right now.”
Blake Shelton: “Maelyn, it’s getting harder and harder to find new, great things to say about you. Every time they come to me and say they need me to say something after her performance, I’m going, what thing can I think of that is better than what I said last time? And this time I think that thing would be the control and the poise that you have. Nothing rattles you. You’re just spot on every time you get on stage.”
Kelly Clarkson: “You’ve always been a phenomenal vocalist, but the lack of control on purpose was what I loved about this. Sometimes I feel like we might be from similar backgrounds and you’re so prepared and you’re so in your head about it, but in this one you played characters, and there were a couple different ones and it was awesome. This was my favorite performance of yours because I just want you to let go of thinking about it, ’cause you’re already naturally so freaking blessed.”
John Legend: “We all know Maelyn is incredible. She is the best vocalist on the show, it’s clear. But I loved the risk-taking that you had today in the performance. There were times when you could have done an easier thing on your voice, a thing that was less challenging. But you always chose to do the riskier thing, and you nailed it every single time. I am so proud to work with you.”
