“Captain Marvel” is the 21st film in the sprawling, infinitely interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s also one of the most consequential entries because it’s the first to center on a female hero (played by Oscar winner Brie Larson), the first to be directed by a woman (Anna Boden, along with co-director Ryan Fleck), and the film that sets the table for “Avengers: Endgame,” which opens in less than two months on April 26. So how does it compare to the movies that came before? Click through our gallery above for every single MCU movie ranked from worst to best based on their Rotten Tomatoes scores.
The new film has been certified fresh with a Tomatometer rating of 82% based on 248 reviews counted as of this writing. The RT critics’ consensus says, “Packed with action, humor, and visual thrills, ‘Captain Marvel’ introduces the MCU’s latest hero with an origin story that makes effective use of the franchise’s signature formula.” But the MCU films have been an embarrassment of riches, at least as far as the critics are concerned. Every single one of them has received a positive rating (60% and over), and several are north of 90%, so the undeniably strong score for “Captain Marvel” still leaves it in the middle of the pack, ranked 13th out of 21, sandwiched right in-between “Ant-Man” (81%) and a tie between “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Avengers: Infinity War” (83% for both).
The critics’ least favorite film in the franchise thus far is “Thor: The Dark World” (66%), while the best probably comes as no surprise: it’s “Black Panther” (96%), which was not only the best reviewed MCU movie, it’s also the first comic book superhero movie to earn an Oscar nom for Best Picture and the first to win Oscars in any category (it picked up three). Will “Captain Marvel” ascend to those heights, or will it serve primarily as the appetizer before the “Avengers: Endgame” main course?
