Talk about a jaw-dropper! Gold Derby readers were confident Max Boyle of Team Kelly Clarkson would advance to the next round on “The Voice,” which made his elimination in Tuesday’s episode all the more shocking. This 23-year-old pop singer from Toledo, Ohio performed “Thinking Out Loud” as his “save me” song (watch above), but the live Twitter voters chose to save Joana Martinez of Team Gwen Stefani instead. That resulted in the eliminations of Max and Cali Wilson of Team Blake Shelton, the other person in the bottom three. Will you miss Max on “The Voice”? Sound off down in the comments section.
“You’re so cool,” Max told his pop star coach just before host Carson Daly announced the results. “Thank you much. This has been amazing. John Legend too, I got to work with both of you guys. This has been an amazing experience.” Max switched from Team Legend to Team Kelly in the knockout rounds, which is where he stayed until his unfortunate elimination.
A heartbroken Kelly responded by saying, “I’m just really shocked” to see Max in the bottom three. After all, he was one of the front-runners to win the entire season, according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds. “This is a very talented season … and everyone’s going home at some point,” Kelly reminded him. She followed that up by inviting Max to perform a duet with her at her Las Vegas residency.
During Monday’s performance show Kelly raved about Max’s “superhuman” powers following his rendition of “Unaware.” “I think my favorite part about your voice is you have so many in there,” she said about his falsetto-rich performance. “You have so much talent. You’re so gifted. You have that falsetto. You have the power of your chest voice. You have this intimacy that you really can’t teach anyone when you’re singing. It’s just such a gift.”
With Max’s elimination, that means Kelly has three artists left on her team in the Top 11: Jake Hoot, Shane Q and Hello Sunday. Can any of them go on to become the third winner for Team Kelly on “The Voice”?
