Max Boyle of Team Kelly Clarkson was back on “The Voice” stage during Monday’s Top 13 show, this time taking on “Unaware” for America’s votes. Kelly was emotionally moved by Max’s decision to dedicate the song to his niece and nephew, joking all Max needed was ice cream in his hands to make him a dream for any future mother-in-laws. Max received a standing ovation from his current coach, but none of the others. Will he survive this week’s cut and make it into the Top 11? Watch “The Voice” performance video above.
“Max, I think my favorite part about your voice is you have so many in there,” Kelly said when it was her turn to comment on his falsetto-rich performance. “You have so much talent. You’re so gifted. You have that falsetto. You have the power of your chest voice. You have this intimacy that you really can’t teach anyone when you’re singing. It’s just such a gift. Like, no one should really cover this song except for people like you that are superhuman.”
John Legend, Max’s original coach who gave him up in the knockout rounds, proclaimed, “It’s really hard to do a song with that much falsetto in it in a competition like this, but you you nailed those notes.” He ended by telling the young artist, “You’re so good at this, Max.”
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about the performance: “Up next is the Ohio singer-songwriter for Team Kelly, Max Boyle. He’s dedicating the song ‘Unaware’ by Allen Stone to his family because it’s one of the songs they request him to sing at all of his gigs. Max enters via the staircase before joining a guitar player on stage. This is a smooth, soulful song that takes full advantage of Max’s signature falsetto. Max has a great stage presence and looks like a pop star, but this may be my least favorite performance from him to date. That’s not to say I think he’s in jeopardy of elimination, I certainly think he’ll be safe. He just hasn’t matched the bar he set for himself with previous performances and his vocals were sort of all over the place. John felt he nailed the song with power and charisma. Kelly says he has so much talent and he possesses an intimacy that’s impossible to teach.”
