“I’m still in denial that I’m leaving,” said Michelle Williams, aka the Butterfly, following her dramatic unmasking at the end of Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer.” Butterfly lost her initial face-off against Fox, which sent her to the smackdown where she competed against Thingamajig. The panelists — Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke and Joel McHale — then voted to send her home, which meant Butterfly had to reveal her true identity in front of America. The Grammy-winning singer, who’s best known for being in Destiny’s Child alongside Beyonce, admitted she was initially hesitant to appear on the over-the-top reality TV show. “But they were like, you can stay in your mask, you don’t have to wear hair and makeup. I was like, I’m sold!” She called it a “liberating” experience being able to be herself and having no one know who she really was.
“I feel bummed, but at the same time I’m leaving on top of the world,” Michelle stated after coming in seventh place in this second season. Only six costumed celebs are still in the running to win the coveted golden mask: Flamingo, Fox, Leopard, Rottweiler, Thingamajig and Tree. Who do YOU want to win?
Michelle confessed she’d previously “put the mic down” in terms of her singing career, wanting to just become a speaker and a mentor. “I really haven’t sang at all this year except for this show,” she admitted. As for her free therapeutic advice, she declared, “Being anonymous just helped me be wild and free. It’s kind of like, okay, now do the same thing with the mask off.”
“I loved the panel’s guesses,” Michelle chuckled. Some of their notable theories included Leona Lewis, Fantasia, Norah Jones, Monica and Kerri Washington, though Jenny got credit for guessing Michelle was under the Butterfly mask from early on. Michelle concluded by saying, “I’m glad I had this opportunity to remind me of who I am.”
