2019 MTV Video Music Awards nominations: Full list of VMA nominees led by Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande

On July 23 MTV announced the nominees for its 2019 Video Music Awards, with Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift leading the way with 10 nominations apiece. These 36th annual VMAs will be handed out at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, during a telecast hosted by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco. Scroll down for the full list of contenders.

Grande is nominated for Video of the Year for “Thank U, Next,” the chart-topping title song from her latest album, which was released this past February. This is her second straight nomination for Video of the Year following her bid in 2018 for “No Tears Left to Cry”; she lost that one to “Havana” by Camila Cabello and Young Thug. “Thank U, Next” has five total nominations including Song of the Year and Best Direction. Grande’s other five noms are for Artist of the Year, Best Hip-Hop Video for “Rule the World,” Best Visual Effects for “God is a Woman” and Best Art Direction and Best Editing for “7 Rings.”

Meanwhile, Swift is nominated for Video of the Year for the third time for “You Need to Calm Down.” In 2013 she contended for “I Knew You Were Trouble,” but lost to Justin Timberlake‘s “Mirrors.” However, Swift was nominated again just two years later for “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar and won. “Calm Down” picked up seven nominations. Her other three are for “Me!” featuring Brendon Urie: Best Collaboration, Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography.

Rounding out the race for Video of the Year are “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish, who has nine total nominations; “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, who has eight nominations; “A Lot” by 21 Savage and J. Cole; and “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers. Who do you think will win top honors when prizes are handed out next month? Winners in the top 14 categories will be decided by fans voting online, while the technical awards will be decided by expert judges. Check out the complete nominations list below.
