After previously winning “The X Factor Vietnam” at age 16, Myra Tran tried her luck on Season 17 of “American Idol” where her audition of “One Night Only” from “Dreamgirls” quickly went viral. Unfortunately, the 19-year-old’s journey came to an end during Sunday’s Top 40 showcase episode in Hawaii following her cover of “How Far I’ll Go” from “Moana” (watch above). “This is the greatest chance I’ve ever had,” Myra said after her shocking elimination. “I did not sing good. And now [my] ‘American Idol’ dream is done.”
Of the three judges — Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry — Lionel was the one designated to give Myra the bad news. “We watched you last night and for whatever reason the song you did last night was not 100% compared to the competition,” he told her. “Unfortunately, it will not take you to the next phase of this competition.”
As Myra burst into tears, Lionel continued, “But we love you very, very much. Don’t let this discourage you, not one bit. We love you to death, okay? I’ll see you back here.” Myra walked away from the judges as Kelly Clarkson‘s “Never Enough” played in the background, an ode to the original “American Idol” winner whom the judges compared Myra to back in her audition.
“That’s so hard,” said Lionel as Myra exited the competition. Luke chimed in, “It’s a tough journey to try to pull off.” The judges encouraged Myra to audition again in the future, implying that perhaps she just wasn’t ready. In past seasons of “American Idol,” people ended up winning who had been eliminated in previous years, such as Candice Glover and Caleb Johnson, so Myra shouldn’t give up quite yet.
The judges seemed less-than-enthused about Myra’s vocal chops when she performed “How Far I’ll Go” at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Honolulu the previous night. “That’s a tough song,” Luke had declared. A less-impressed Katy added, “It was a bit all over though.” Do YOU think the judges were too hard on Myra? Sound off down in the comments section.
