“America’s Got Talent” went through a major facelift in Season 14 as Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough joined the judges’ table for the first time, replacing longtime panelists Mel B and Heidi Klum. Now that the season is wrapping up (the finale airs Wednesday night on NBC), it’s time to judge the judges! Do you prefer the dynamic duo of Union and Hough, or were Mel B and Klum more your jam? Vote in our poll below and then defend your choice down in the comments section.
With Terry Crews also signing on as the new host, this year marked the biggest cast shakeup in the reality TV show’s history, since Season 8 when Klum and Mel B were both hired to replace a single judge, Sharon Osbourne. Howie Mandel has bragging rights as the longest-serving “AGT” personality after originally joining the judges’ table back in Season 5, and Simon Cowell officially became a panelist in Season 11 after creating and producing the worldwide franchise. Other former judges include the likes of Brandy Norwood, David Hasselhoff, Piers Morgan and Howard Stern.
Union is a BET Award-nominated actress who’s perhaps best recognized for her roles in “Bring It On” and the “Bad Boys” universe. Hough is a former “Dancing With the Stars” pro dancer/judge who’s also acted in musicals like “Grease Live” and “Rock of Ages.” Their “AGT” judging styles were similar in that they remained mostly positive and inspirational, and tended to stay away from nasty comments or hitting their red X’s.
Perhaps Union and Hough’s most memorable moments throughout “AGT” Season 14 were when they pressed their Golden Buzzers for Kodi Lee and Luke Islam, respectively. Lee is the inspirational singer who was born blind and autistic and is now the front-runner to win the $1 million prize. Islam is the aspiring Broadway star who was shockingly eliminated during the Semifinals.
Even though Klum and Mel B have left “America’s Got Talent,” their six seasons on the show will not be forgotten. Over the years Klum anointed such memorable Golden Buzzer acts as Makayla Phillips, Angelina Green and Sal Valentinetti, while some of Mel B’s picks were Amanda Mena, Sharon Irving and ultimate winner Darci Lynne Farmer.
