During Katy Perry‘s critique of Madison VanDenburg for “American Idol’s” Queen week, the pop star judge paraphrased one of the most infamous movie quotes of all time when she declared, “No more wire hangers!” The line comes from the classic B-movie “Mommie Dearest” (1981), which starred Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford, the iconic Hollywood actress and overbearing mother of her daughter Christina. The film went on to “win” Worst Picture of the Decade at the Razzie Awards. In case you’re unfamiliar with this viral movie moment, in which Joan berates Christina for having wire hangers in her closet, you can watch the video clip above.
While fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie had nothing but praises for Madison’s performance of “The Show Must Go On,” Katy gave her constructive criticism in the hopes that she’ll continue to grow even more on ABC’s reality TV show.
“You have come so far in such a short amount of time,” Katy began. “Now, can I be a stage mom? We have a very, very short amount of time left, so you still have a little far to go. I think you’re really stepping into it. I need you to just take it up a couple more notches. I gotta see a hair flip. I gotta see a stomp. ‘Cause that’s what your voice is doing, but your body is not yet connected. I think you’re almost there, you just need a little stage mom push. No more wire hangers!”
Madison later told host Ryan Seacrest that she had nails in her hair in honor of Queen week, and when Katy found that out she exclaimed, “Oh God! Don’t do a hair flip!” Prior to Madison’s performance she was mentored by former “Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert, who’s now the lead singer of Queen. “If she can find how to own the stage in this song tonight, she’s gonna blow us away,” Adam predicted.
