“Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus spends its 15th week at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated July 20. That means it’s just a week away from tying the all-time record of 16 weeks held by “One Sweet Day” (by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men) and “Despacito” (by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber). But just when he thought it was safe at the top, on July 8 Billie Eilish dropped a remix to her current number-two hit “Bad Guy,” which could give the song the boost it needs to run Lil Nas X off the “Road.” That remix features a verse by none other than Bieber, who thus could prevent his own record from being matched.
Watching history in the making is always fascinating in the music business, but in this era of on-demand streaming it sometimes looks like a contact sport. Because just four days after the “Bad Guy” remix, Lil Nas X released another “Old Town Road” remix with Young Thug and Mason Ramsey, which got its own new animated video capitalizing on the popularity of a widespread “Storm Area 51” meme. Watch it below. It’s weird and playful and and perhaps the most 2019 thing ever in how it incorporates a social media in-joke into an already viral music hit.
Lil Nas X even invited Mariah Carey to remix the song. Before long every human on Earth will have recorded a version and it will have spent 500 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100. Maybe he could even bring Eilish and Bieber on the “Road” with him so they can share the top spot. Listen to both songs below, and repeat them ad infinitum depending on which one you want to top the chart.
