All week long “The Voice” fans have been making their Gold Derby predictions for who they think will win Season 16 and who’ll be eliminated next, and Oliv Blu of Team Blake Shelton appears to be in danger. Following her fan-chosen performance of Sade‘s “Smooth Operator” during Monday’s Top 13 episode, this 20-year-old from Flossmoor, Illinois has 2/7 odds of being one of this week’s five eliminated artists. Do you agree or disagree with our readers’ racetrack odds? There’s still time to make or update your picks before Tuesday’s results show.
“Every time I see you sing you’re making me regret that I’m your former coach,” said John Legend following her “Smooth Operator” cover. “You were so impressive. First of all, this is not only the voice, this is the hair, this is the look, it’s everything. Sade’s songs sound like they’re simple to sing, but it takes a lot of discipline to sing with that level of control and clarity and you pulled it off beautifully tonight.”
When it was his turn to speak, Oliv’s current coach Blake proclaimed, “I love Oliv the most. I gotta say, you sounded absolutely incredible. I also gotta say I feel like tonight you kind of came out of your shell. You really embraced what this is — this moment, how cool it is — and you became an artist on stage tonight and I loved seeing that from you. I think you’re gonna see the results be great tomorrow, too.”
Team Blake towers over all of his competitors with a whopping six contestants competing in the Top 13. Of this group, America voted through Kim Cherry, Carter Lloyd Horne, Gyth Rigdon, Dexter Roberts and Andrew Sevener, with Blake then opting to save Oliv. Blake’s two eliminated artists in the Top 24 round were Kendra Checketts and Selkii.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “As promised Oliv served up something we rarely see on the show–a slow, groovy track. Surprisingly she was able to show off the power and versatility in her voice and also prove that she can bring the theatrics needed to be a star. I kinda really loved it?!”
