“Outlander” leading lady Caitriona Balfe is nominated for the fourth straight year at the Golden Globes. While she lost her bids for Best TV Drama Actress in each of her first three tries, this Irish beauty has a secret weapon that could finally bag her the trophy at Sunday’s ceremony. Unlike in years past, her hit Starz series aired new episodes while voting was going on. That could give her the edge over her competition, who are all competing for shows that have long since finished.
Among her rivals for the title is the reigning Golden Globe champ Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), who is contending for the sophomore season of the Hulu series based on Margaret Atwood‘s bestseller about a dystopic society. Also in contention are two stars of freshman series — Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) and Julia Roberts (“Homecoming”) — and Keri Russell for the final season of “The Americans.”

All three of those women have already won Golden Globes as well: Oh and Russell for “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Felicity” respectively while Roberts has three Globes on her crowded mantle for the movies “Steel Magnolias,” “Pretty Woman” and “Erin Brockovich.”
Balfe could well be rewarded for her overdue status. We know that the 90 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. love her work on “Outlander” as they nominated her in 2016, when she lost to Taraji P. Henson for “Empire”; in 2017 when she was bested by Claire Foy (“The Crown”); and last year.
And they are enamored of her show as well, bestowing a Best Drama Series nomination on “Outlander” in 2016. It was bested by the first season of “Mr. Robot.” That was also the year that Balfe’s on-screen hubby Tobias Menzies reaped a bid in the competitive catch-all supporting actor category. He was edged out by “Mr. Robot” scene stealer Christian Slater.
