‘Outlander’ season 5 trailer, Caitriona Balfe’s big birthday, and what’s next for Claire and Jamie: ‘This season is about family’ [WATCH]

“Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Caitriona, happy birthday to you!” sang the crowd at New York Comic Con when Caitriona Balfe took the stage with her “Outlander” co-stars Sam Heughan, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Duncan Lacroix and David Berry. Balfe turned 40 on October 4, and how better to celebrate than with a trailer for season five, which Starz premiered during the convention. Watch the new trailer above, and scroll down watch the cast tease the new season’s developments below.

Season four ended with Jamie (Heughan), Claire (Balfe) and their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) reunited in colonial America after having been separated by centuries and continents. But the danger of the impending American Revolution puts their lives at risk. “When this war you tell me about eventually comes, it would be safer in your time,” says Jamie to Claire about her life in the 20th century. But Brianna tells Roger (Richard Rankin) in another scene, “Our family is here.”

“This season is about family,” said Heughan about how the story develops in season five. “This season is very much about the family being stronger together and being torn apart by all these different factors … For Jamie, I think he’s really in this tough place where he’s sided with the British. He’s being pitched against his godfather.”

Balfe added, “Grandpa and grandma Frazier are doing well. It’s really lovely: we get to see them really enjoy having their family around. Obviously it’s quite complicated because I’m not sure that they both are on the same page with Bree and Roger staying where they are. But we see them as a really strong unit this season.”

Fans will have to wait a little while longer for this latest droughtlander to end. Season five premieres on February 16, 2020 — two days after Valentine’s Day appropriately enough, but by then it will have been more than a year since the season four finale in January 2019. However, as fans of the show know by now, time is no match for true love.
