2019 Producers Guild Awards nomination shockers: ‘A Quiet Place’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in, ‘Beale Street’ and ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ out

The Producers Guild of America Awards announced its 10 nominees for Best Picture on Friday: “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,”  “Green Book,” “A Quiet Place,” “Roma,” “A Star is Born” and “Vice.”

Seven of these 10 films number among those we are predicting will be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. The three exceptions are the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which we have in 11th place, and two longshots: the thriller “A Quiet Place” and the comedy “Crazy Rich Asians,” which both have 100/1 odds.

DISCUSS All the Oscar contenders with Hollywood insiders in our notorious forums

Expect those three films to rise in the ranks in the coming days given the success rate of the guild in previewing the eventual Oscar nominees. Conversely, the bottom three contenders in our current Oscar top 10 roster — “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “First Man” — which were snubbed by the PGA might well fall out of the predicted Best Picture line-up.

When the Oscars expanded to 10 nominees in 2010, the Producers Guild of America followed suit. But while the academy shifted to a sliding scale in 2012, the PGA has stuck with 10 contenders. That leeway has helped it maintain a staggering success rate at previewing the eventual Oscars roster. Indeed, the guild has predicted 70 of the 81 (i.e., 86.5%) of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years.

The PGA also revealed the five nominees for Best Animated Feature: “The Grinch,” “Incredibles 2,” “Isle of Dogs,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” All but “The Grinch” figure in our  our predicted line-up of Oscar nominees . For that final slot at the Academy Awards, we’re betting on the import “Mirai.”

PGA Awards winners will be revealed during a Jan. 19 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
