‘Project Runway All Stars’ recap: ‘Of Corsets Fashion’ turned underwear into outerwear [UPDATING LIVE BLOG]

It’s corsets, of course! One week after the “Project Runway All Stars” season seven contestants tackled their unconventional materials challenge in “Buckle Up!” they got another unconventional challenge of sorts. In “Of Corsets Fashion” the 12 remaining designers turned underwear into outwear by making runway looks out of corsets. Who cinched up a win, and who wore out their welcome? Scroll down for our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

Last week’s “Buckle Up” challenge ended in the surprising elimination of Seth Aaron Henderson in 13th place. Every “All Stars” contestant this season is a past winner, but Henderson was undefeated, winning both of the seasons he previously competed in (“Runway” season seven, “All Stars” season three). The fact that he could be ejected so soon means no one is safe in this competition.

Making this season especially unpredictable is the fact that half of the contestants come from “Runway” spin-offs from around the globe, so American audiences aren’t as familiar with their work. But so far the international contestants are off to a slow start. Only one foreign champ has been eliminated so far (Sunny Fong from the Canadian edition), but the first three design challenges were all won by winners of the American series: Dmitry Sholokhov (week one), Anthony Ryan Auld (week two) and Irina Shabayeva (week three).

Critiquing this week’s runway show along with the regular panelists were guest judges Olivia Culpa, who won Miss Universe 2012 representing the US, and fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff. Find out what they and their fellow judges thought of this week’s designs below starting at 9:00pm (all times listed are Eastern).

9:01 p.m. – Following the elimination of Seth Aaron, a two-time winner, the remaining designers were shook by the reality that no one is safe in the competition. Their anxieties weren’t calmed when a stream of models walked on to the runway in lingerie. It was immediately clear that this week’s challenge would revolve around designing intimates for women of all sizes. Alyssa Milano clarified that the focus of the challenge would actually be the corset–she tasked the designers with “celebrating a woman’s figure” by using a corset to create a high fashion look.

9:05 p.m. – During their sketching period, some of the ideas thrown out by the cast were an “hourglass” jacket (Irina), separates in order to “create freedom” in a corset (Dmitry) and big flowy pants (Django Steenbakker). At Mood Fabrics, Christina Exie settled on something architectural, Cynthia Hayashi bought coral, light blue and off-white fabrics and Jasper Garvida decided on playing up gender dynamics in his garment.

9:08 p.m. – While beginning construction, Michelle Lesniak sliced her finger and had to rush to the medic for treatment. It looked like it would be a minor cut, but it could impact her ability to work as fast as normal. In the end it was just a small cut and after some quick bandaging she was back to work with no trouble.

9:15 p.m. – During her workroom visit, Anne Fulenwider warned Dmitry that his corset wasn’t “that special” and encouraged him to embellish it a little more. She also questioned Michelle’s inspiration of “a lightbulb glowing front he inside out,” but loved that Irina was pushing herself in a challenge is already difficult. Django wasn’t agreement with Anne’s critique of his fabric choices, specifically his choice to use a dark forest green, but he was determined to always design his own vision.

9:20 p.m. – When the models arrived for their fitting Cynthia realized that she didn’t have enough fabric in the back of her dress and so she had to redesign the garment to add a new panel of fabric in order to get the dress to fit. Meanwhile, Dmitry and Michelle caught Jasper gluing lace to his outfit which they took as an offense considering this is a design competition. Uh oh. Trouble brewing?

9:27 p.m. – Jasper continued to push buttons, this time directly when he questioned Christina’s design decision to put her corset underneath rather than as outerwear like he interpreted the challenge prompt to be.

9:37 p.m. – On the runway, Michelle and Sean Kelly‘s looks were very polished while Christina was concerned that there were some construction issues in hers. Cynthia was pleased with the silhouette of her garment, but questioned whether the last minute addition of her hat was a good one. Anya Ayoung-Chee was worried she might fall into the bottom because of an awkward fit while Juli Grbac said she “finally did something she likes.” Both Anthony and Irina were very pleased with what they produced and I’d have to agree–their’s were two of my favorites!

9:41 p.m. – Based on the judges scores Anya, Evan Biddell, Anthony, Sean, Juli and Michelle were all declared safe. That left Jasper, Irina, Dmitry, Django, Cynthia and Christina as the six designers with the three highest and three lowest scores.

9:46 p.m. – The judges loved Christina’s idea as well as the color story and weren’t too worried about the construction issues. Georgina Chapman told Jasper that his choice with the lace on the black had to be perfect and his execution of it just wasn’t. In addition, the other judges found his idea and choices to be outdated. Dmitry’s look on the other hand was fashion forward and aside from a few minor issues, the judges thought it was wonderful work. Isaac Mizrahi referred to Cynthia’s dress as “too pretty to a fault” and Georgina advised her to not second guess herself. In his first critique in front of the judges, Django stood by his look, but the judges weren’t over the moon about the look as a whole. Irina got a mixed set of reviews, but overall they appreciated her risk and think that she pushed the idea of a corset the furthest.

9:59 p.m. – Between Irina, Dmitry and Christina the judges selected Christina as the winner, her first of the season! Next they called Django safe, leaving Jasper and Cynthia in the bottom and vulnerable to elimination. In the end it was Jasper who fell short and was sent home only one week after producing a high score in the last challenge.

NEXT WEEK: The designers head to the zoo to find inspiration from animals for their next look. Dmitry and Michelle, despite being friends, get into a disagreement in the workroom and it looks like it might spill on to the runway in front of the judges.
