Django Steenbakker may be down, but he’s not out … yet. The “Project Runway All Stars” designer has gotten low scores from the judges for the last three weeks in a row, but he hasn’t even been in the bottom two yet, let alone eliminated. However, he hasn’t been safe since week three, and he hasn’t gotten a single high score from the judges yet. Will he finally have a breakthrough tonight in week seven, or will the judges finally cut him loose? Our readers think he’ll finally be eliminated — but we’ve been wrong before.
Steenbakker gets leading odds of 41/20 of being sent home from the show in ninth place, but if there’s one thing that might keep him in the competition for a while longer, it might be his bold choices. When he’s been near the bottom of the design heap he has made it through on his ambition, while less adventurous, less thoughtful looks have been ousted instead, like Jasper Garvida‘s unflattering black-and-white silhouette in “Of Corsets Fashion” or Juli Grbac‘s blah black dress in “On the Prowl.” Meanwhile, judge Georgina Chapman commented about one of Steenbakker’s unsuccessful looks, “I kind of love him for his epic failures.”
In a season full of past champions from the American “Runway” series and from foreign spin-offs (Steenbakker won the Netherlands version of the show), the judges expect big ideas, and Steenbakker certainly delivers them, even if not successfully. Perhaps the key to victory for him will be to finally listen to mentor Anne Fulenwider. He has clashed with her repeatedly over her critiques of his fabric and color choices, but when his finished looks reach the runway we can see from the judges’ reactions that he should have taken her advice every time.
Michelle Lesniak ranks second in our predictions with 16/5 odds of elimination, even though she won a design challenge just two weeks ago. Cynthia Hayashi, who like Steenbakker hasn’t won a challenge or gotten a high score from the judges yet, is third in our forecasts with 39/10 odds. Do you agree with our picks?
