‘Project Runway’ elimination predictions: Frankie survived controversial judges’ decision in week 1, but maybe not week 2

We’re not two weeks into “Project Runway’s” 17th season, and already the show has made lots of people angry. Specifically, many of our readers were mad that the judges eliminated Cavanagh Baker for a bland but competent design in the season premiere instead of Frankie Lewis for an ambitious but disastrously constructed bodysuit. Will Lewis survive for a second week? Our readers aren’t so sure.

According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Lewis is the front-runner to be eliminated in tonight’s second episode with leading odds of 23/10. Maybe we’re wrong. Maybe Lewis just had extraordinarily bad luck in the first challenge and she’ll bounce back with consistently flawless designs from here on out. But it’s concerning that Lewis needed so much help just to get any kind of finished garment on her model.

Baker wasn’t exactly tactful when she derided Lewis for needing so many other designers to assist her, but it’s nevertheless true that Baker arrived at a finished garment on her own (okay, with a little hand-sewing from her model) while all the king’s needles and all the king’s thread couldn’t keep Lewis’s unflattering straps together on the runway.

But it’s early yet. There are still 15 designers in the competition and Lewis only has to be better than one of them to stay on the show for another week. And some of our users think that one designer may be Kovid Kapoor, who advanced safely through the season premiere with his flowing Grecian goddess gown and had one of the most endearing moments of the whole show when he bonded with his transgender model MiMi. He ranks a close second in our predictions with 59/20 odds of elimination.
