Hester Sunshine is the only “Project Runway” designer this season so far who has won more than one challenge, and now she has won three: “All the Rage,” “Power Play” and “Blame it on Rio.” For weeks “Runway” fans who have made their predictions here in our predictions center have been skeptical about Sunshine’s chances, but not anymore. As far as our readers are concerned, “Runway” is now a two-way race between Sunshine and the so-far consistent Sebastian Grey. Going into last week’s “Rio” episode we thought Grey would duke it out with Renee Hill to win the whole series, but then Hill was shockingly eliminated in another fraught team challenge — death to team challenges! When the judges picked Sunshine to win that same night we couldn’t deny her any longer: she may really have what it takes to go all the way.
As of this writing Sunshine leads our predictions with 15/8 odds, followed closely by Grey with 47/20 odds. After that there’s a fairly steep drop-off to Garo Sparo in third place (9/2 odds) and Tessa Clark in fourth (10/1 odds). But if Sunshine has the potential to go all the way, she also has the potential to go off the rails. She’s got immunity from elimination going into this week’s ninth episode, but the last time she had immunity she irritated the judges with a so-called “elegant” look that included pasties. Brandon Maxwell thought they looked like taffeta fortune cookies glued to her model’s breasts, so if Sunshine hadn’t been automatically safe, she might have been shown the door.
If Sunshine gambles on a look like that when she doesn’t have immunity, she could go from the top of our odds to packing her bags just as fast as Hill did.
