In the all-new sixth episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on April 4, the ten queens still standing competed in offbeat athletic challenges. Choreographer Travis Wall and Olympic figure skaters Mirai Nagasu and Adam Rippon are the guest judges of their endeavors. Which contestant came out on top and was the winner of this challenge on episode 6 of season 11? And were Gold Derby’s predictions correct that Shuga Cain would be eliminated this week?
In episode 5, Shuga came perilously close to being bounced but Ariel Versace went home instead. Both had to strut their stuff to to the Whitney Houston classic “I’m Your Baby Tonight.” New Jersey girl Ariel counted some missteps among her moves. In the end, RuPaul Charles opted to throw a lifeline to New Yorker Shuga who, at age 40, is the oldest queen still in the competition.

9:01 p.m. – After last week’s Monster Ball where Shuga had to lip sync for her life she is feeling down about not meeting the expectations she had going into the season. While she deals with that privately, Yvie Oddly starts giving some of the other girls advice that they didn’t ask for. Vanessa Vanjie Mateo takes it very personally when Yvie brings up the judges asking her change up the silhouette and tells Yvie that maybe she should try glamour since she relies on the spooky drag every week.
9:04 p.m. – The next morning Ru arrives to announce the next mini challenge: perform in a quick fitness routine with guest Love Connie. The workout was super gag worthy with a splits, high kicks, cartwheels, rolls and flips, but when all was said and done it was A’Keria Davenport and Plastique Tiara that impressed Ru and Connie the most.
9:11 p.m. – The mini challenge was just a warm up for this week’s maxi challenge: the first ever Draglympics where they’d perform a freestyle floor program that includes fanography, voguing and shablam in two teams of five. As winners of the mini challenge A’Keria and Plastique chose their teams. A’Keria got Brooke Lynn Hytes, Silky Nutmeg Ganache, Yvie and Shuga while Plastique got Ra’Jah O’Hara, Vanjie, Nina West and Scarlet Envy.
9:16 p.m. – A’Keria’s team was feeling great about their abilities, but were worried about the tension between Silky and Yvie that had popped off earlier in the day (a follow up to Yvie and Vanjie’s fight from the previous night). After vowing to leave that drama at the door, the team discussed their extra talents that they could use in the challenge: Brooke Lynn’s ballet training and Yvie’s contortionism, for instance.
9:23 p.m. – During rehearsals with Adam and Travis, team leader A’Keria was the first to show a sign of weakness when it came to matching the counts to the fanography choreography. Adam’s advice to her was to make sure that if she messes up to not let it show in her face because then everyone in the audience will know it. When it came to shablamming Silky had trouble meeting the “graceful” aspect of her drop, but still gave it 100% and didn’t complain at all. Meanwhile, Brooke Lynn was hitting every beat perfectly and was praised by both choreographers.
9:28 p.m. – Because of her medical condition that causes her joints to hurt, Yvie had a tough time pushing through the pain during rehearsal but vowed to not be open with Travis about her condition because she didn’t want to be babied.
9:29 p.m. – Later, Plastique’s team hit the rehearsal stage with Ra’Jah and Vanjie getting good notices at the start, but Scarlet, Plastique and Nina were all, let’s say, slightly messier. Though Travis thought Scarlet was the clear weak spot on the team he also had a feeling that she’d be able to turn it out on performance night.
9:37 p.m. – Ahead of the challenge Vanjie was feeling some type of way about not winning any of the challenges so far this season. She felt like she should be doing better and was in a position where she could be letting Ru down after she was brought back this season for a second chance. A’Keria and Silky were nearby to offer their support to Vanjie and remind her that all she can do is push harder and continue to perform like she knows how.
9:41 p.m. – Yvie opened up about her joint condition and how she struggles with the physicality of drag. The sign of vulnerability helped shed a new light on Yvie to the other girls and showed them that she can project a strong presence all she wants, but there is always something deeper going on.
9:49 p.m. – First up was A’Keria’s Team Tuckpantistan. After completing their fanography, Yvie performed her contortion solo, Silky performed her baton twirling solo, A’Keria lead the crew in a twerking bit, Brooke Lynn danced ballet and Shuga, well, she faded into the background. Overall the group held it together incredibly well and probably won…
9:53 p.m. – And Plastique’s Team Glamazonia wasn’t as bad as we thought they’d be after that shaky rehearsal! Their routine did include more acting than dancing though, but they used humor to their benefit and let Vanjie take the lead and center for most of the bits. At one point Nina got to lip sync to Latrice Royale quotes, a highlight of the whole routine.
9:57 p.m. – It was hard to catch, but apparently Yvie hurt her ankle during the performance and so during the closing ceremony she had it wrapped in bandages!
10:01 p.m. – On the runway the category was: “all that glitters” and so the queens strutted in their most glamorous golden glitter garments. Brooke Lynn’s Norma Desmond gold gown and head wrap was executed perfectly, and when Silky followed it up with a boring gold jumpsuit it looked even better. But I actually really loved Yvie’s get-up because she added a cane to it in order to help support her walk and she worked that cane all the way down the runway, creating a character as she always does.
10:10 p.m. – After the runway, Ru announced that Team A’Keria won the challenge together, but ultimately it was A’Keria that was the maxi challenge winner as the team’s leader and probably because she continues to serve some of the best wigs I’ve ever seen on the show! Before they left the stage Ru asked Yvie about her ankle who said that she’s a fast healer and that she’ll be taking it easy until the next challenge… so no medevac yet thank goddess.
10:12 p.m. – During critiques, Travis asked Plastique to turn up the volume on her personality despite looking flawless on the runway. Adam had the same advice for Ra’Jah, but from a performance standpoint and Michelle complimented her look, but warned that covering her face was a risky choice. Vanjie got high marks for her big energy, but took a major hit for her generic leotard look that she was literally read for last week. And, gosh, can we END the glitter on the chest? Nina was told that she sold every moment during the performance, but Michelle asked her to balance out her figure by padding the bottom half of her body. And then Scarlet was told that she was completely lost in the performance and on the runway, but Travis defended her as the most improved from a dancing standpoint.
10:16 p.m. – Then Ru did as Ru does and asked all the girls to name the girl that they’d send home this week. Plastique, Ra’Jah, Vanjie and Nina all said Scarlet based on the challenge, but at least Nina qualified it by saying that Scarlet works very hard. Scarlet didn’t want to name anyone, but called out Ra’Jah for having already been in the bottom a lot.
10:24 p.m. – From the group, Ru took the advice of the girls and called Plastique, Vanjie and Nina safe leaving Scarlet and Ra’Jah in the bottom to lip sync for their lives. The two performed to “Last Dance” by Donna Summer. When the song transitioned from slow to uptempo, Scarlet pulled out a pair of scissors to cut her dress off for a jumpsuit reveal and then later threw glitter in the air. She called it pulling out all her tricks to make up for her lack of dancing skills, but in the end it wasn’t enough to compare against Ra’Jah’s higher octane performance. The elimination makes Scarlet the first maxi challenge winner to exit the competition this season, a surprise especially when Ra’Jah had already had to lip sync twice this season.
NEXT WEEK: The girls must create a “farm to runway” look for yet another creativity and sewing challenge and it looks like it’ll be round 2 between Yvie and Silky!
