The British are… ahem… coming! The inaugural season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” will premiere on Thursday, October 3 as an official spin-off of the two time Emmy winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Four time Emmy winning RuPaul Charles is on hand as host and head judge along with his best friend and US series regular judge Michelle Visage. Comedy stars and television personalities Alan Carr and Graham Norton are also tapped as regular (but rotating) judges.
The series will consist of eight hour-long episodes airing every Thursday on the BBC Three section of BBC iPlayer in the UK and be available day-and-date in the US and other territories via WOW Presents Plus at 3 pm ET. Gold Derby will be following along all season with weekly recaps of the series to see which of the show’s 10 queens will be crowned the UK’s first drag superstar.
The 10 queens competing are Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Crystal, Cheryl Hole, Divina de Campo, Gothy Kendoll, Sum Ting Wong, Scaredy Kat, The Vivienne, and Vinegar Strokes. Divina and Vinegar are the seniors of the group both at 35 years old while Kat is the youngest at 19, one year younger than the US version’s youngest competitor, Tatianna who was only 20 years old when she first competed on season 2.
As is standard of the series, RuPaul will be joined on the judges’ dais each week by a selection of celebrity guest judges. The premiere welcomes Tony winner and Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield, followed by appearances from Emmy nominee Maisie Williams, BAFTA winning actress Michaela Cole, fashion icon Twiggy, television personalities Lorraine Kelly and Stacey Dooley, as well as a trio of girl group superstars Geri Horner (Ginger Spice of the Spice Girls), Jade Thirlwall (of Little Mix) and Cheryl (of Girls Aloud). Also featured this season are singer MNEK as vocal coach to the queens and AJ Pritchard (known for “Strictly Come Dancing” and as “Britain’s Got Talent” semifinalist) and his brother Curtis Pritchard (of “Love Island UK” and “Dancing with the Stars Ireland” fame) as choreographers.
