Surprise! Nobody saw these 13 SAG TV nominations coming: Billy Crudup, Catherine O’Hara, ‘Kominsky Method’ …

All season long Gold Derby’s experts, editors and users have been making their predictions for the 2020 Screen Actors Guild TV Awards, but nobody could have predicted all of Wednesday morning’s curveballs and shockeroos. Among the surprises that fell outside of our racetrack odds include Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”), who wasn’t even in the predictions center, and Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”). In addition, three ensemble casts caught us off-guard: “The Kominsky Method” in comedy and “Stranger Things” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in drama. Scroll down to see all 13 TV surprises in the SAG nominations.

Predicting the SAG nominees is always tricky because the guild doesn’t distinguish between lead and supporting performances for television. That’s why featured players Crudup, Steve Carell (“The Morning Show”), Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) and David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) are competing against lead actor Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) in the male drama category.

In all, six supporting actors surprised us by receiving SAG bids: Crudup, Carell, Harbour, Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”), Alan Arkin (“The Kominsky Method”) and Emily Watson (“Chernobyl”). Leading performers we didn’t see coming were O’Hara, Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Russell Crowe (“The Loudest Voice”) and Joey King (“The Act”).

SEE 17 unforgivable SAG Awards TV snubs: Meryl Streep, Tobias Menzies, ‘Succession’ among the head-scratchers

For the drama ensemble nominations, Gold Derby erroneously thought “Succession” and “This Is Us” would receive cast bids instead of “Stranger Things” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” On the comedy side, we only missed “The Kominsky Method,” thinking instead “Veep” would receive a goodbye hug for its final season.

Here are the year’s top television snubs, based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users, All-Star Users and all Users:
