Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s ‘Senorita’ finally hits number-one, but Taylor Swift could soon bump them off

After months of nothing but “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, suddenly we’re getting a lot of upheaval at number-one. Just a week after Billie Eilish finally claimed the lead position with “Bad Guy,” now we have another new chart-topper: “Senorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Scroll down to see the rest of the top 10 hits on the chart dated August 31.

“Senorita” is the first number-one single for Mendes and the second for Cabello, who previously topped the chart with her breakthrough solo hit “Havana” featuring Young Thug. But Mendes probably would have ruled the chart months ago if it hadn’t been for “Old Town Road,” which stayed on top for a record-shattering 19 weeks thanks in large part to its massive success on streaming platforms.

Back in May, Mendes’s previous single “If I Can’t Have You” popped up on the chart, but it got stuck in second place behind “Old Town” and never reached the summit. Then “Senorita” debuted in June, also in the runner-up position, and had to wait until its ninth week on the chart to finally claim its throne. On the same day that “Senorita” was announced as the new number-one, Mendes and Cabello performed the duet at the MTV Video Music Awards where they won Best Collaboration. Not a bad day’s work.

But will “Senorita’s” reign be short-lived? Taylor Swift also got caught in “Old Town Road’s” wake, but she released a new single and video, “Lover,” last Thursday, then released her new album of the same name on Friday, and also performed at the VMAs on Monday. All that fanfare around her new music could potentially push her to number-one for the first time since “Look What You Made Me Do” two years ago. Time will tell.
