Shawn Sounds became the latest artist to receive a four-chair turn on “The Voice” during Night 5 of the blind auditions. This 33-year-old Texas middle school teacher grew up wanting to be a singer, so he often incorporates music in his classroom. “You lit a fire!” Kelly Clarkson told Shawn after his performance of K-Ci & JoJo‘s “All My Life.” Shawn had a tough decision to make between Kelly, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and John Legend, so which coach’s team did he join? Watch “The Voice” performance video above.
As for their adjective-filled pitches, Kelly praised Shawn’s “solid” voice and “amazing” range, Adam raved about his “strong and powerful” end to the song, and Blake said he wanted Shawn to be “the best you” he could be. John picked up on his “beautiful” tone and “great” control, raving, “That was one of the best ending runs I’ve ever heard. It was like you did the triple-axle you when you’re figure-skating, and you just nailed it.”
After an agonizing decision, Shawn eventually chose John as his coach. Backstage, John added, “Not only was he happy to be there, but he was confident in his ability. Shawn’s really going to dazzle the American audience because he just has this natural charisma that’s infectious.”
Shawn is now the third four-chair turn this season to join Team Legend after Maelyn Jarmon and Matthew Johnson. As for the other four-chair artists so far in the blind auditions, Dexter Roberts picked Blake, Jej Vinson went with Kelly and LB Crew opted for Adam. Do you think Shawn has what it takes to win Season 16 of “The Voice” for new coach John Legend?
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about Shawn’s performance: “The final artist of the night was Shawn Sounds, ‘teacher by day, rock star by night’ in his own words. He performed ‘All My Life’ by K-Ci & JoJo to delayed reactions from all four coaches who did eventually turn their chairs for him! All the coaches made heartfelt and passionate pleas for Shawn to join their team, but his choice was the John — that’s another four-chair turn win for the newbie!”
